The Mile `0' Cairn - Historical

Take a souvenir photo here as you
embark on your adventure to follow the
footsteps of the U.S. soldiers of 1942.
The Cairn was erected to commemorate
the exact spot that the United States Military
surveyed as the very beginning of the
construction of the Alaska Highway. All
mileages on the Alaska Highway were (and
still are) measured from this point.

Housed in a renovated grain elevator, the
Dawson Creek Art Gallery is a very unique
facility. It has year-round exhibitions of local
artists and traveling collections of major
provincial and national galleries. Also in the
building is an impressive photo exhibit of
the building of the Alaska Highway. The
Northern Treasures Gift Shop has a wide
variety of local products from our artisans
and craftsmen.

Traffic Circle Surveyor Statue
The statue in the traffic circle is a portrayal
of a surveyor that worked on building the
Alaska Highway. His clothing and survey
equipment are true to the 1942 period
and he is pointing the way to Alaska.
Emily Mattson, a local artist, created this
amazing statue by welding and shaping
scrap metal that she found discarded
on farms in the region.
